What is Exactly Plaque Formation

Abstract: The shanghai dental think that the dental caries begins from the dental plaque. Therefore, it is of important clinical significance to understand the formation of plaque for the prevention of the dental caries.

As the shanghai dental said, the formation of the dental plaque is more complex then what we have thought, and there are three stages of the formation theory in the following parts, which now are universally accepted.

The first stage is called the film-forming stage. The saliva glycoproteins in the oral cavity is a substance in the saliva, which are contained in each person's saliva. While coming to the contact with the teeth, the saliva glycoprotein can be attached to the enamel surface, to form the film-like material, which is referred to the obtained film. It provides a matrix for the initial adhesion of the oral bacteria, to create the conditions for the formation of the dental plaque. The data shows that the gingival sulcus is the first site for the formation of acquired film, for the tooth.

The second stage is known as the bacterial attachment stage. Most researchers believe that the acquired membrane is of great importance for the attachment of different bacterial. It is observed that, when the obtained film is formed on the tooth surface, the adhesion of bacteria comes up quickly, certificating that the rate of attaching is surprisingly quick. The bacteria grows on the surface of the acquired film and yields up some acids, to cause the glycoprotein deposition. The Blood Streptococcus and the Streptococcus mutans can be synthesized into the glucan, composing the plaque matrix with the deposition of glycoprotein together, which creates a foundation for the formation of plaque.

The third stage is the mature stage of plaque, in which the bacterial on the acquired membrane realizes the growth, the development, the reproduction and decays as well, and at the same time achieves all the complex metabolic activities in the film. According to the data, it is analyzed that, the proportion of mature bacterial plaque shows as the following, the facultative anaerobic streptococci accounts twenty-seven percent, the facultative diphtheria bacilli is twenty-three percent, the anaerobic diphtheroids occupies eighteen percent, the peptone streptococcus takes up thirteen percent, the Weiyong Shi bacteria is six percent, and the Bacteroides makes up as four percent as the Clostridium bacteria, while there is only three percent for the Neisseria, and the Vibrio is as least as two percent. Among the mature plaque, the cariogenic bacterial is the Streptococcus mutans, the radiation bacteria, the blood Streptococcus and the Lactobacillus.

The dental plaque is a complex ecosystem structure of bacterial attached to the calculus, generally not to be confused with other illnesses. Brushing is an essential measure to remove dental plaque, which is the most important method, as well. So we should cultivate a good habit of brushing.
