Sub-gingival plaque is below the dent-gingival junction. It means that sub-gingival plaque can be found art tooth adherent zone, epithelial adherent zone and non-adherent zone.

Apart from the areas of two kinds of dental plaque, the identifications of them are different, which is also the standard of dental plaque classification. Supra-gingival plaque looks similar to the color of tooth surface. The dentist can use disclosing dyes work to change the color of dental plaque which makes the dental plaque have different color with the white teeth.

Based of this classification, supra-gingival plaque’s amount is hard to be detected unless it is enough thick. And if supra-gingival plaque is very small, you can use pigments or disclosing wafers to find it. It has three colors. Namely, it might look gray or yellowish gray or yellow. It has a strong forming ability. For example, it is able to form within one hour after you clean your teeth and develop to a large amount in 30 days or less. This dental plaque is affected by your diet, your age and oral hygiene and other factors.

As for Sub-gingival plaque, it can be classified into 3 types. There are tooth attached Sub-gingival plaque, unattached Sub-gingival plaque and attached to epithelium one. They directly invade periodontium by the junction of epithelium.

The other classification of dental plaque by its relationship to the disease state: health-associated dental plaque and disease-associated dental plaque.
